How Do I Change My Name After Marriage? A Step-by-Step Guide

Changing your name after marriage is an exciting yet detailed process. Knowing the legal steps is essential, whether you’re taking your spouse’s last name, hyphenating, or creating a new name.

Step 1: Obtain Your Marriage Certificate

Your marriage certificate is the official document proving your name change. After your wedding, request certified copies from the issuing authority (usually the county clerk’s office).

Step 2: Update Your Social Security Card

Visit the Social Security Administration (SSA) and submit:
✔ A certified copy of your marriage certificate
✔ Your current Social Security card
✔ A government-issued photo ID
✔ The SS-5 form (Application for a Social Security Card)

Your new Social Security card will have your new name, but your number will remain the same.

Step 3: Change Your Name on Your Driver’s License or ID

Next, update your driver’s license or state ID at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in your state. Bring:
✔ Your updated Social Security card
✔ Marriage certificate
✔ Current driver’s license or ID

Some states may require additional documents, so check with your local DMV for specific requirements.

Step 4: Update Your Passport and Travel Documents

If you plan on traveling soon, update your passport to reflect your new name. Submit:
✔ A passport renewal or name change form
✔ A certified copy of your marriage certificate
✔ Your current passport
✔ A new passport photo

The U.S. Department of State processes passport name changes, and processing times may vary.

Step 5: Notify Banks, Employers, and Other Institutions

Now that your legal identification is updated, notify:
Banks and Credit Card Companies (update your account names and cards)
Employer & Payroll Systems (to update tax and direct deposit records)
Insurance Companies (health, auto, life)
Voter Registration and Utility Bills

Some organizations may require a copy of your marriage certificate or updated Social Security card as proof of your name change.
